There are many valuable inputs to the strategic analysis, but one often overlooked and easily implemented is an annual culture survey to gauge the ‘culture’ of your most important source of competitive advantage – your people. A culture survey will:
1. Give you an idea of the overall ‘culture’ in the store which can be benchmarked for annual comparisons;
2. Provide clarification of HR initiatives that need to be implemented in order to increase productivity, increase team satisfaction and decrease staff turnover;
3. Measure the success of previous HR initiatives; and
4. Give your people an opportunity to have their say, sending an important message as to their value in the business.
Naturally, there are many different versions of culture surveys. In retail, we find it advantageous to:
1. Use a paper-based questionnaire which can be easily completed by all people in the business;
2. Provide an incentive through a prize draw for completing the survey (a draw for a day’s paid leave works well!); and
3. Ensure results are summarised and communicated to all of your team with identified action plans that have resulted from the survey.
