Where was I brought up?
Born way back last century in Te Puke, my upbringing was distinctly rural with my family living on orchards all of my life. I still return to the orchard often although I try to avoid April & May each year in case I get recruited to pick the family kiwifruit crop!
What was I doing before I joined Cardinal Solutions?
After loving my time boarding & playing rugby at St Paul’s Collegiate in Hamilton, I joined the Royal New Zealand Navy (Junior Officer University Scheme). This saw me spend a year doing basic training before attending the University of Auckland where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Political Studies). After 13 years in the RNZN, it was time for a move and I joined Foodstuffs Auckland to run their leadership & management training.
Why do I work with Cardinal Solutions?
Setting up Cardinal Solutions in 2003 was the realization of a dream and a desire to take the best and worst of what we had learned over the years from government and large business and apply it (or not as the case may be!) in our own context. Critical to our success is to surround ourselves with a dream team who deliver the best training experience in the country. Mixing with these high performers regularly is a privilege.
What do I do at Cardinal Solutions?
My role is first and foremost about looking after our team and clients, without either of which we would not have a business. Secondary to this is encouraging other large businesses to partner with us to assist with the development of their people and business objectives. This sees me spend a lot of time travelling and talking – fantastic!
What do I do when not working?
When not working, I enjoy spending time in the outdoors, particularly on a yacht! My sailing highlights include an inter-Navy regatta in South Africa in the late 90’s, navigating the replica of Captain Cook’s ‘Endeavour’ around the coast of New Zealand, crewing as a watch leader on the Spirit of New Zealand, navigating the New Zealand Defence Force entry in the Sydney to Hobart Ocean Race and cruising with my family in Vavau, Tonga and the Whitsunday Islands in Australia. An annual boys trip out of Auckland is also anticipated with great enthusiasm! When not away, some time at home on the sunny Hibiscus Coast with my lovely wife and two boys is priceless!
